Mythical Creatures exhibition

For their latest exhibition, illustration collective Girls Who Draw will be unleashing an array of fabulous beasts and beings to fill the windows and walls of Here Gallery. There will be an opening reception on Saturday 9th February from 1-4pm, and the exhibition runs until Saturday 6th April.

The show accompanies Mythical Creatures, their fourth limited edition postcard book, and will include a selection of prints and original artwork from the book as well as 3D work, comics, and new pieces created especially for the gallery.

A welcome return to Sarah, who first exhibited at Here Gallery in 2007 shortly afer graduating. She has been illustrating and printing ever since, and launched her own card and gift business Stormy Knight in 2010.

Here Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition by emerging contemporary artist Zanne Andrea. Andrea will present a new installation of work incorporating a variety of sculptural objects and images made from fabric, digital print, collage, found materials, and wall projections. She will create the installation using an active process of assemblage, layering and editing her selections to reveal connections and construct narratives, intentionally highlighting the theatricality of both objects and gallery.

In Two Minutes to Midnight Zanne Andrea addresses the notion of a nearing Doomsday, an apocalyptic countdown to unimaginable catastrophic events. A starting point for this exhibition is The Doomsday Clock, used by the Board of Directors of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists since 1947 to measure how close the human race is to destroying the world. This idea of a figurative midnight mirrors much of the anxiety felt during the atomic age and the Cold War, but is also relevant to the more recent anxiety of living in a post 9/11 world with terrorism threats, economies on the brink of collapse, uprisings, protests, world disasters and nuclear meltdowns.

Two Minutes to Midnight coincides exactly with the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis, a nearly catastrophic nuclear standoff that lasted 13 days between the Soviet Union and The USA, which occurred in October 1962. This exhibition also happens in the months preceding what is known as the end of the Mayan calendar, 21 December 2012, and to some has become yet another predictive date of destruction and/or renewal of the human race.

Zanne Andrea is an American artist currently based in Bristol, England. In 2011 she received a BA (hons) Fine Art from The University of the West of England and has received a variety of awards, including a prize in the Motorcade/Flashparade National Open Competition 2011. This is her first solo exhibition.

A freak tidalwave has left the contents of a nonexistent attic washed up on the gallery walls...

Four artists based in the south west of England take over Here Gallery . Together they have created a parallel culture,  fragments of stories and illustrated memorabilia that combine elements of the familiar and unfamiliar.

Jack Teagle is a freelance illustrator, comic artist and painter, his most recent comic "Fight 2!" was published by Nobrow Press. Jack joined forces with fellow illustrator Liam Barrett earlier this year, to exhibit as part of the Pick Me Up graphic arts fair held at Somerset House, London.

Rose Robbins self-publishes comics as one half of Often and Mistakes, she was recently awarded "Best New Blood" at D&AD 2012. Simon Daly has also self-published his comics, including fantastical tales of electronic music pioneer Delia Derbyshire. Simon's experience in a variety of filmmaking roles, from music videos to software development, has led to collaborations with several artists, most recently assisting Liam and Rose in animating their work.

Holly Drewett 'Invisible Cities'

Originally from Cornwall, Holly studied a BA in Fine Arts at University College Falmouth. Specialising in printmaking she continued her practice at North Star Print Studios, Brighton before embarking on her current residency at South Hill Park Art Centre, Bracknell.  Holly combines photographic and drawn elements with a range printmaking of techniques including etching, silk screen, monotype and relief to produce her work.

Architectural study is something that remains integral to Holly’s practice, whether to focus on line, space, form or a sense of nostalgia that a building or place might create. Visiting different cities she documents her experiences through drawing and photographs. Deconstructing and fragmenting source imagery, regenerating these pieces to create a new unified space. A place personal to her experience there, a description of the landscape and everything it contains..Fascinated by the qualities of digital and traditional printmaking techniques and how they can be used in conjunction she integrates the two ways of working. Allowing these process’ to overlap Holly allows unexpected results to become starting points for new prints and the work starts to regenerate itself once more in a continual process.

"This exhibition explores themes of journey, landscape, architecture and sense of place. Using a range of printmaking techniques, I break down components of source imagery, both drawn and photographic to reconstruct spaces, generating an impression of that place. Heavily influenced by India and Nepal, the exhibition celebrates the rich culture and colour that is so prominent in these countries. At the heart of this body of work is printmaking, intrigued by both traditional and digital techniques the processes are allowed to overlap and the results are used to develop the work. "

Strange Brew features the work of two of the most distinctive illustrators/artists working in the UK today. Adam Higton and Marcus Walters have a mutual appreciation of each others work and it is this that has brought them together for this exhibition of solo and collaborative artworks. Both artists offer a mix of different styles and techniques which are placed into this melting pot of cosmic imagery. The artworks set Adams amazingly detailed figurative work against Marcus's simple, graphic landscapes. This exhibition heralds a true mix of styles and media, a kaleidoscopic collection of works that combine drawing, collage, and screen printing.

Adam Higton created the Yule Bringer Saga in 2008.. Yule Bringer is an ever-growing collection of characters that inhabit a psychedelic festive village and surrounding forest... The saga features a range of mystical and jovial characters such as; Mr Log, Foxglove, Sorcerer Sword, Pine Wizzo, Dressman and Mr Frog... These dandy demons are often conjured up through the medium of detailed black and white Bic biro drawings and experimental electronic and percussive sound. Since its formation in 2008 Adam has exhibited in Stockholm and Edinburgh, performed musical lectures and has published two zines "I" and "II - Foxgloves Christmas" with the London based independent publisher and risograph wizards, 'Landfill Editions.'

Marcus Walters is a graphic artist based near Stroud in Gloucestershire. Marcus creates his artwork by hand and working across a variety of media including collage, drawing and screen printing. The resulting images are simple and endearing... minimum flourishes that create maximum impact. Marcus has a wide commercial client list including Honda, Citroen and Innocent Smoothies, Howies and Uniqlo amongst others. he sells editions of his screen printed artworks in many shops and galleries across the UK including the V&A.

Tom Cops - 'Midwest' exhibition and book launch

Midwest is the first solo exhibition from photographer, musician and artist Tom Cops, showing medium format photographs of people and places in the American Midwest.


In August 2010, Tom travelled around the American Midwest for three weeks with his band My Two Toms playing as many inappropriate venues as possible. During the tour he attempted to photograph everyone he met, as well as the places he passed through.

Looking for odd details in the landscape, his colour photographs tell the story of the small towns of Montana, Minnesota, North & South Dakota, Colorado and Wyoming, while his black & white portraits tell us about the people that live there.

To accompany the exhibition, Betty & Dupree will be publishing a collection of these photographs, also called “MIDWEST”, with a foreword by acclaimed Minnesotan blues musician Charlie Parr and watercolour chapter pages by Jerwood Drawing Prize nominated artist Aaron Sewards.

The exhibition opens Thursday 27th October, 7-9pm, with live music from My Two Toms,
and continues until 19th November.

Muju - Deep Water

Deep Water is an exhibtion of new works from the artist duo who work under the moniker Muju. Having spent time in Brighton running an independant store & gallery, ToyLife, they are currently based in the coastal town of St Ives in Cornwall, next to the sparkling Atlantic Ocean.

The show will feature new paintings & limited edition screenprints from Mr Muju, and intricate handmade sculpture from Miss Muju.

The pair have exhibited worldwide in group & solo shows since 2005, including Giant Robot San Francisco, Munky King Los Angeles , Damien Minton Gallery Sydney. Their work has been featured in numerous publications on art, design and contemporary culture.

Aine Venables - Replaced, From Hay to Here

An exhibition of recent work by Aine Venables exploring ideas of belonging, identity and location.

Naomi Bell - Ratio

Bell graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 2010 with a First Class Honours Degree in Sculpture, winning the School’s Chairman’s Medal and nominated for the prestigious Newbery medal. She has since shown work as part of the RSA New Contemporaries at the Royal Scottish Academy, and been published in the 2011 Catlin Guide.

This exhibition will combine printed works with sculptural objects, where reactive surfaces make subtle references to themselves as well as the architecture and forms of the gallery itself.

Coloured Matter - Helen Shaddock

Helen Shaddock is a Glasgow based artist who graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2008. She has exhibited in national and international exhibitions, and her work belongs to a number of public and private collections.

Playfulness lies at the centre of Coloured Matter, together with order, control and process. Despite following a systematic approach, unpredictable results occur throughout the casting process. As the plaster splashes and dribbles, layers merge to create interesting formal relationships; Shaddock’s colourful constructions aim to “capture a sense of the wonderment children experience from the simplest of things.”

Peter Chasseaud - Creative Letterpress & Typography

As founder of The Tom Paine Printing Press, Peter Chasseaud is an artist who is at the forefront of British creative letterpress and typography. His show at Here Gallery comprises a related group of 10 limited edition, box-framed typographical prints, along with unframed prints from these and other editions.

Also available are Peter’s poetic photobooks, and a range of small letterpress items which he has printed on his hand-presses.

Christine McLoughlin - Surface Tensions

17th February - 12th March

Christine McLoughlin is an artist with an Irish heritage originally from Newcastle Upon Tyne. Graduating in Sculpture and Environmental Art at Glasgow School of Art in 2009, she has exhibited throughout the UK and Europe. Surface Tensions will be her first exhibition in Bristol.

“I find meaning in the ephemeral and sensual in life. I love to translate the parallels I notice between the way materials are moved and changed by nature, and the way people respond to shapes, spaces and fabrics, into intense experiences, which reveal a refinement of my hidden feelings.”

Surface Tensions will draw on the beauty found in water. For Christine, the simple and pure chemistry of seeing how full of water a bowl can be and the majesty of the paper clip not sinking in it has a parallel with a first love relationship where you reveal more and more of yourself and trust you won’t ruin the bond you’re building together.

The basement Here Gallery will be converted into an interaction between the viewer’s touch and Christine’s material creations. We will be drawn into her intimate installation and have space to personally reflect.

Lydia Shirreff - Animal, Vegetable, Mineral

Lydia Shirreff is British/Japanese artist living in the UK - focusing on illustration but also installation and sculpture.

“My passion is knowledge. I am endlessly curious about the shape and form of naturally occurring objects: animal, vegetable or mineral. My work so far has been concerned with studying and interpreting natural patterns and forms - I treat my practice as an ongoing documentation of nature.”

Lydia’s drawing creates an outlet for this insatiable fascination. The outcome is largely unplanned and encompasses natural history, geology, fossils, structural dynamics and scientific diagrams. The objects and patterns that inhabit these drawings aren’t copies, they are detailed studies, distillations, extracts of what she finds most interesting.

“I have created installations (a collection of polyhedral objects ) that take this idea further and examine the exploratory response that viewing art and viewing natural history have in common. Through these installations and drawings I am attempting to pass on my own wonder as well as create new experiences.”
