Graduating in Sculpture and Environmental Art at Glasgow School of Art in 2009, she has exhibited throughout the UK and Europe. Surface Tensions will be her first exhibition in Bristol.

“I find meaning in the ephemeral and sensual in life. I love to translate the parallels I notice between the way materials are moved and changed by nature, and the way people respond to shapes, spaces and fabrics, into intense experiences, which reveal a refinement of my hidden feelings.”

Surface Tensions will draw on the beauty found in water. For Christine, the simple and pure chemistry of seeing how full of water a bowl can be and the majesty of the paper clip not sinking in it has a parallel with a first love relationship where you reveal more and more of yourself and trust you won’t ruin the bond you’re building together.

The basement Here Gallery will be converted into an interaction between the viewer’s touch and Christine’s material creations. We will be drawn into her intimate installation and have space to personally reflect.

preview, Thursday 17th February, from 8pm

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=153492794704006

Lydia Shirreff - Animal, Vegetable, Mineral

Lydia Shirreff is British/Japanese artist living in the UK - focusing on illustration but also installation and sculpture.

“My passion is knowledge. The outcome is largely unplanned and encompasses natural history, geology, fossils, structural dynamics and scientific diagrams. The objects and patterns that inhabit these drawings aren’t copies, they are detailed studies, distillations, extracts of what she finds most interesting.

“I have created installations (a collection of polyhedral objects ) that take this idea further and examine the exploratory response that viewing art and viewing natural history have in common. Now, two men aim to rediscover the near-forgotten yokai, and return these ancient beasts to their former glory, in the form of the Bento Bestiary.

14 spirits are lovingly rendered in bold, colourful illustrations, using just 4 spot colours to bring the beastly, and bizarre, very much to life. Newman draws heavily on early and mid-20th century design in his work, incorporating worldwide themes from European deco to Japanese film posters and 50's American cartoons, never losing his strong sense of a most English deadpan humour.

Each image is complimented with words from Donaldson. Whether detailing the love letters of Nure-onna (a gigantic snake-headed woman), or a poetic treatise on the child-eating desires of the Kappa (a sort of strange, perverted turtle), the writer always has one foot in the carnival tent, one on the streets of noir, and the other inside a restaurant; a sort of freakish, hungry, Raymond Chandler.

The Wolf’s Whistle
Illustrated by Bjørn Rune Lie, Words by Scott James Donaldson

The first installment in the Nobrow 'Behind the Tails' series which explores the back-stories of fairy tales' most notorious villains. The first follows Albert, a comic-creating, scrawny little wolf who spends his lunch break drawing and dreaming of selling his story to Wonder Comics. In reality he is terrorised by the three bratty Honey-roast brothers, sons of the local property magnate, who will stop at nothing to torment their weaker classmates. Eventually Albert is forced to take arms against his oppressors and fulfill his destiny as the crime-fighting Lone Wolf.

This fairy tale prologue is beautifully crafted by Bjørn Lie’s versatile hand and imagination. Using just 3 spot colours, Bjørn has created a rich, eye catching illustrations that harkens back to mid-century Americana with a prohibition twist with a cast of bizarre and outlandish characters of extreme proportions. A timeless treat for the young and the young at heart.

Both books are published by Nobrow Press.

Julianna Swaney, Tad Carpenter, Sally Elford

30th November - 24th December

A group show full of prints and small scale original works, plus other artist-made goods.
All especially selected to make ideal gifts, and affordably priced.
http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=140062962709927

Featured Artists:

Tad Carpenter is an American illustrator and printmaker, who has designed several children's books and also teaches at the University of Kansas, Missouri. Since graduating from the RCA in 2007 Mimi's engagingly colourful and playful images have captured the attention of many. She is currently represented by Big Active.

After two years of back-to-back exhibitions and illustration work, Mimi relocated to the desert lands of and around Alice Springs in January 2010. After a hard few months of struggling to make ends meet, working dingy cafe jobs and pulling pints at a back-packers' bar, she slowly gathered enough materials to set up a basic silkscreen studio at home.

This show features work from her first foray into stencil silkscreen prints as well as the brightly coloured gouache on paper works which she has become known for.

Exhibition runs 9th September to 9th October.

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=115453525175988

SUMMER SALE

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; He was a part of SNAP Studio before leaving to form Doppkit Collective Studio along with Robert Hunter and other Bristol illustrators. Recently Jon has created illustrations for two books by author Sonya Hartnett and will releasing his own book through Nobrow press entitled Birchfield Close on April 21st.

Jon’s work can be melancholy in the best possible way. Making you realize that you are not alone in the appreciation of tiny details of memory; he creates prints, books, and comic strips observing quiet moments and places, focusing on beauty in secluded corners.

Robert Hunter also graduated from UWE in 2008, he uses the idea of memory in his work. I his book People I Remember, Places I Don’t Robert takes a representation of a memory (a photograph) and by separating people from place, reorders it according to his own internal logic. Father and brothers are torn from the scene of a shooting range and transplanted upon a tranquil sea of white nothingness. In the words of Fred Madison, the doomed protagonist of David Lynch’s Lost Highway "I like to remember things my own way; Not necessarily the way they happened"

'Across the Way' opens Thursday 4th March

Adam Hancher, Jack Hudson, Luke Jinks and Owen Gatley are Bristol-based illustrators who are about to graduate from UWE's Illustration Degree. Two artists, both from far afield coming together in the gallery to show new works and hopefully collaborate.

Christopher Bettig was born and raised in Connecticut, and attended the Maryland Institute College of Art, where he graduated with a BFA in painting. His design studio, The Mountain Label, is based in Los Angeles, where Christopher currently lives.

Bettig's work focuses on geometry and natural forms but has a good sense of humour, naïveté and playfulness whilst also recalling late 70’s cartoons and design. His long list of clients, includes Fila, Converse, Urban Outfitters, and Poketo. Chris has also shown around the country, adorning gallery walls in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and most recently, Giant Robot in LA and a solo exhibition in New York at Scoop NYC gallery.

Lizzy Stewart is originally from Devon but has been living in Edinburgh where she graduated with a first class degree in illustration from the Edinburgh College of Art. She is a hardworking lady and as one half of Sing Statistics with the artist Jez Burrows recently published the book ‘We Are The Friction’; an anthology of illustration and short fiction. On her own she has produced work for such clients as Analogue Books, Tiny Showcase, Woodpigeon, End of the Road Records, The Guardian, Howies and more.

Lizzy’s work suggests a retro-graded Victorian folk art, as if, over 100 years ago, society folk and poor folk alike had sat for an illustrator instead of a photographer. Intricate trees and buildings sit side by side with great bears and bearded explorers all sucked into and filtered through Lizzy’s great prism. But that sounds silly; “It’s about bears. Burroughs (who often receives credit for the invention) and Burroughs's "systems adviser" Ian Sommerville was called upon to produce the machine for them.

The dreamachine produces pulses of light between 8-13 Hz, the frequency of alpha-waves in the brain during the dream stages of sleep. The pulsating light stimulates the optical nerve and alters the brain's electrical oscillations.

Viewed with the eyes closed, the viewer experiences bright, complex swirling patterns of colour behind their closed eyelids.

Part of the worldwide NAKEDLUNCH@50 celebrations, marking the 50th anniversary of the first publication of William S. Burroughs’ groundbreaking novel. There is a programme of live events and films taking place on Sunday 13th September, at the Cube Cinema, Bristol.

Tuesday 8th - Saturday 19th September

David’s work illustrates ideas rubbing against each other, drawing on references to ancient mythology along side popular culture; creating a dialogue and vocabulary that skips between the historic and the contemporary.

“My work deals with an ongoing quest to control and define the human condition. The work depicts all the devious devices we use to conceal and reveal our true identities as we struggle both to fit in and stand out. I make work that illustrates the shifts between the multitude of fictions we labour under and the reality of who we are.

I often work directly onto objects I find so I can give up full control of what I make. This is very important to me as I am drawn into a dialogue between myself and my ever changing environments. My work shifts and mutates under the influences of external ideas, environments and conditions. I make things that force me to consider what it is to be human.”

David is a freelance artist and his work has been applied to a variety of contexts, including illustration, graphic design and theatre set design. Clients include Chicken Shed Theatre Company and The British Council. She became interested in photography at the age of twelve when she bought a doll and took some photos of it. The hobby then progressed into a passion for portraiture and fashion.

Since then she has had features with publications including The Independent and Dazed and Confused, and others worldwide. By the age of fifteen she already had offers for several exhibitions, and has worked with various professional models, musicians and individuals.

Eleanor usually uses a Canon EOS 400D with a 50mm f.1/8 lens for her work, however she also enjoys using Polaroids and film SLRs every now and then, a selection of which will form part of this exhibition. She often works with natural light, and although she does manipulate many of her images, tries to minimise post production. Eleanor’s work is often staged outdoors and can involve a variety of props, and has even been known to take baths into flower beds, doors into fields, and mattresses to the beach.

In 2009, she plans to study Photography, English and Fine Art at a sixth form college. She hopes to then travel the world, working fulltime in fashion and documentary photography.

Christmas & New Year opening times

Opening on Thursday 4th Dec

Featuring exclusive works by Felt Mistress, Jonathan Edwards, Ben the Illustrator, Stuart Kolakovic, Ben Newman & Jill Bliss

Opening night: Thur 4th Dec, 6.00 – 9.00 pm

continues until Wed 24th Dec and into the new year

Expect everything from amazing originals to plush toys, screen & digital prints, vending machine toy dispensers and much more.
